Throughout human history, seismic technological shifts, from the wheel and combustion engine to the internet and mobile telephony, have fundamentally restructured the nature of labor. While these innovations triggered massive disruption, they ultimately birthed new, meaningful categories of work and broad societal benefits.

However, the current AI “tsunami” represents a transformation of a different magnitude, unfolding at a velocity previously unseen in our species’ timeline. We remain perilously ill-prepared for a storm that has already reached our shores.

The introduction of the power loom in 1785 provides a chilling historical parallel, marking a period of job displacement without precedent. As we stand on the precipice of the AI revolution, we must ask: are we poised to repeat this cycle, or is the coming displacement far more severe?

This analysis explores how the adoption of the loom offers both critical parallels and sharp warnings for our modern era, articulating the stark reality of a disruption that is already accelerating at light speed.

The mechanized loom decimated 900,000 artisan weaving roles over four decades. The impact is equivalent to the loss of 24.3 million jobs in the modern United States. AI is projected to eclipse this figure with a velocity that is difficult to fathom. While the loom took generations to reshape the labor market, AI is compressing that cycle into mere years. Much like the British institutions of the 19th century, our modern social safety nets remain perilously ill-prepared for a storm that has already reached our shores.

Over the course of 40 to 50 years, nearly a million weavers and artisans saw their livelihoods evaporate under the weight of this seismic technological shift. The initial shock was cataclysmic; in the first three years alone, the workforce plummeted by 250,000, a 31-fold decrease.

The introduction of the loom was so cataclysmic that it triggered civil unrest and state-sanctioned violence; hundreds were murdered in attacks, and 12,000 British troops were deployed to suppress Luddites who attempted to destroy the machines, resulting in dozens being shot or executed by hanging.

The name Luddites, often dismissed as simple anti-tech reactionaries, actually derives from Ned Ludd. Ludd was an 18th-century worker who, after being whipped and taunted, smashed two knitting machines in a fit of rage. Luddites adopted his name and became an organized force dedicated to resisting the destruction of their livelihoods through a struggle for survival against the machine.

Both the loom and AI emerged as cataclysmic, general-purpose innovations. They did not merely automate isolated tasks but fundamentally restructured the nature of work across entire industrial sectors. Much like how the power loom displaced 250,000 weavers and restructured the very fabric of society, AI is now performing a similar transformation within knowledge work. In both eras, the productivity gains are real and enormous, yet they arrived far faster than our institutions, education systems, or social safety nets could ever prepare for.

While the Luddites are often dismissed as simple anti-tech reactionaries, they were in truth an organized force dedicated to resisting the destruction of their livelihoods. The parallels to our modern era are stark: as we grapple with regulatory paralysis, moral anxieties, and a vacuum of governmental oversight, we find ourselves on the precipice of a similar struggle for survival. We are facing a machine, an intelligent system, that seeks to supersede not only the human hand but the very functions of the human mind.

where the analogy breaks down

The most significant difference lies in which kind of labor is being superseded. In the 19th century, the loom replaced physical, low-skill repetitive tasks. The disruption was localized, centered on a single industrial sector (textiles), though it was then the largest. The most jarring departure is the velocity of displacement. While the loom’s disruption unfolded over generations, AI is compressing that cycle into years or mere months, effectively circumventing the generational absorption mechanism that once allowed society to adapt.

Where the loom replaced the human hand, AI targets cognitive labor. These “troubleshooting little genies” can now iterate across billions of sources in seconds, reducing ten hours of high-level analytical work to a matter of minutes.

The scope is equally expansive, moving simultaneously across nearly every white-collar sector. From routine administration to sophisticated tasks like voice synthesis and translation, the AI tsunami is engulfing the entire knowledge economy at once.

The dimensions of divergence run deeper than speed alone. Where the loom demanded massive capital, factories, machinery, and mill towns, AI requires minimal capital: API access and a laptop. Where the loom’s disruption was geographically concentrated in industrial centers, AI’s disruption is global and diffuse, hitting workers in every time zone simultaneously. Where the loom displaced low-income manual workers, AI is targeting middle-class knowledge workers, the very group that historically benefited from previous waves of automation.

Displaced weavers could retrain for factory work; the destination of retraining was a real, growing sector with demand for human labor. Today, the cognitive skills under threat are themselves the retraining destination. The paralegal, the radiologist, the junior analyst, and the copywriter are being asked to upskill into the same field that just superseded them.

This march into the middle-class domain is relentless; the rise of large-scale models and agentic systems is poised to decimate established sectors like media and coding. The impending phase of Agentic AI will leverage multi-step reasoning to supersede professional roles in finance, marketing, law, and medicine.

Current estimates suggest a global loss of 92 million jobs, a figure that likely errs on the side of caution (WEF, Future of Jobs Report 2025). Ultimately, this displacement is projected to be 380X larger than that of the loom.

the optimistic and pessimistic reads

Optimists point to history, noting that automation has always created more meaningful jobs and raised living standards in the long run. The Industrial Revolution did ultimately produce far more jobs than it destroyed, but only after a period of real hardship for the generation caught in the middle.

The pessimistic read is that with AI, the sheer breadth and speed of disruption may mean that “eventually” arrives too late for millions of white-collar workers. The loom’s disruption was eventually absorbed because economic growth created new categories of demand. The open question with AI is whether that process will work fast enough, and whether the gains will be distributed broadly or captured almost entirely by those who own and deploy the technology.
We are currently in the early phases of a very long story. We must be very intentional about the policy choices we make now, or we risk a brutal, uncompensated disruption that makes the early industrial age look mild by comparison. We are writing about the future of our species right now.

final thoughts

Beyond this, and also deeply concerning, is that those profiting from the development of AI are likely not in a position to fully consider the consequences of the genie now out of the proverbial bottle. Profit and greed seem to be the primary drivers, without thoughtful consideration of our collective future. Who will be the “Luddites” of this century, and will unrest and violence occur? Where and how will oversight and regulation occur?

History offers hope, but not a guarantee.
